THE PROCESS...

STEP #1: IN YOUR GROUP, DECIDE WHO WILL FILL EACH ROLE (SEE BELOW)

STEP #2: DECIDE WHICH ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCE YOU WOULD LIKE TO INVESTIGATE

STEP #3: CONDUCT RESEARCH TO FULFILL YOUR ROLE WORKING CLOSELY AS A TEAM

STEP #4: PREPARE YOUR ARGUMENTS IN AN ORAL PRESENTATION & WRITTEN PROPOSAL. ALSO, CREATE A WORKING MODEL OF THE ENERGY SOURCE FOR YOUR PRESENTATION (SEE TASK)

STEP #5: DEBATE WITH OTHER TEAMS ABOUT THE FEASIBILITY OF EACH ENERGY SOURCE

STEP #6: THE TEAM WITH THE BEST PROPOSAL & ARGUMENT WILL BE AWARDED THE CONTRACT FROM GOCAT's INC (this team will get the highest grade as well as a special prize)

SCIENTIST: It is your job to fully understand how the energy source works & be able to convey this to others on your team. Here are some questions to guide you in your research.

1. How does the energy source work? Will it work in our area with the resources available to us?

2. What are the by-products of this energy source?

3. How is the energy harnessed from this energy source?

4. How much energy is currently being produced using this type of energy source?

ENVIRONMENTALIST: It is your job to find what impacts the energy source will have on local ecosystems. We are looking for sustainability, a feasible energy source with minimal impact.  Here are some questions to guide your research.

1. What impact do the by-products of this energy source have on the environment?

2. Does this energy source use any nonrenewable energy resources?

3. Are there any threats to public health from this energy source?

4. What impact does the production of energy from this source have on the environment?

5. Does this energy source produce greenhouse gases that might enhance global warming?

ECONOMIST: It is your job to make sure that the energy source is efficient & cost effective. The cost of implementation in the area should not exceed what profit is gained. You must look at the short-term & long-term. Here are some questions to guide your research.

1. How does the cost of the alternative energy source compare to current energy sources in the area?

2. What is the cost of implementation for this energy source in our area of the southeast?

3. How will the energy source impact employment in the area?

4. Are there any useful by-products of the energy source?

HISTORIAN: It is your job to find out how this energy source has been used in other parts of the world. Also, what people in the local area might think about this new energy source and misconceptions that they have about the energy source. We want our customers happy! Here are some questions to guide your research.

1. When was this energy source first implemented & where?

2. Where is this energy source currently being used?

3. Will the community easily accept this new energy source? Have others where it is already used?

4. How has this energy source impacted the lives of those using it? (positive & negative)
